Horses and Jumping

Proven Facts about horses and jumping.

DID YOU KNOW:

That the amount of impact put on the head plates of a saddle doubles for every foot a horse jumps?  If you weigh 150lbs and are jumping a four foot fence then 600lbs of pressure is being put on the bars of the tree which ultimately reflects on the shoulders of your horse. The equatin is "your weight" times the "number, in feet", you are jumping.

What are the most common saddle ailments found in jumpers with regard to saddle fit?  Horses often become locked in the scapula and have undue pressure going towards the back of the saddle which causes training issues.

A saddle tree can become twisted by mounting from the ground?  Consider the amount of torsion that happens as you mount from the ground and watch how much the saddle slides. When the saddle slides during mounting you are putting undue pressure on the spinous processes (vertebrea) that have absolutely no protection. Whenever possible mount using a mounting block and use one that is high enough minimize saddle shift - a three step mounting block is worth the extra cost.

Some saddles, even new ones, may have twisted trees due to faulty molds that are used. Molds cost thousands of dollars to make which is why some companies out there are banking on you not being able to identify flaws in the craftsmanship of saddles.
